What to expect from this Botswana Northern Highlights safari:
This 12 day Botswana northern highlights safari will take you to the most northern reaches of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. You will travel across diverse habitats and enjoy excellent game viewing and birding.
Guests will be accommodated in comfortable tented camps. These camps will be erected prior to the guests arrival. Enjoy delicious meals next to the camp fire and lunches in the open African bush.

Day 1: Maun to Xakanaxa, BotswanaGuests on their Botswana safari will travel from Johannesburg and arrive at Maun at midday. From Maun, you will be flown by charter plane into Xakanaxa. The flight from Maun offers guests beautiful views over the Okavango Delta.
Guests will be able to spot some of the bigger game from the air. These include the large breeding herds of Elephant, while the plains are home to large herds of Buffalo and Lechwe.
Once you've landed at Xakanaxa, you'll be able to spot smaller game and bird species such as the Dark Goshowk, several hornbills, Greater and Lesser Honeyguide and the Pin-tailed Whydah. |
Day 2 & 3: Xakanaxa, Moremi Game Reserve, BotswanaThe next 2 days you'll get to explore Xakanaxa in the Moremi Game Reserve. Wake up early and enjoy a cup of coffee and a light breakfast next to the camp fire. After the light breakfast, guests will be able to enjoy some game viewing and birding. Stop during the morning for some drinks and snacks in the African bush.
You will return to the camp between 10am and 11am, where you'll get to enjoy a delicious brunch. After brunch, you can relax, read a book or shower. Guests will get to enjoy another game viewing opportunity during the late afternoon. Some of the game guests could spot includes Buffalo, Lion, Elephant, Red lechwe and sitatunga antelope.
Xakanaxa also boasts a diverse range of bird species. Some of the bird species found in the swampy areas include African Rail, African Crake, Red-chested Flufftail and Purple Swamphen. In the open waters, guests can spot Yellow-billed Stork, African Skimmer, Goliath Heron, African Fish Eagle and the threatened Slaty Egret and Wattled Crane. |
Day 4: Xakanaxa to Khwai, BotswanaToday you will travel the 60km (37.28 miles) to Khwai River situated in the Okavango Delta's most eastern extremity. You will enjoy an early breakfast after which you'll leave on a game drive on your way to Khwai. The drive will take between 3 and 4 hours.
Enjoy a coffee break with some snacks before continuing the game drive to Khwai. Guests will arrive at camp just after lunch where they can freshen up and relax. After afternoon tea, you'll head out and explore the area.
Come of the African wildlife guests might get to see on route to Khwai River includes Leopard, Lion, Cheetah, Serval, Giraffe, tessebe, Zebra, Roan and Sable antelope.
The area is also rich in bird life. Some species to keep a look out for include African Hawk-Eagle, Little Sparrowhawk, African Harrier Hawk, Stierling's Wren-Warbler, Scarlet-chested Sunbird and the Long-legged Bustard. |
Day 5 & 6: Khwai ExplorationThe next two days of your Botswana safari find you exploring the Khwai area. Enjoy an early morning light lunch before heading off to do some game viewing. The area is known for Elephant breeding herds, Lion, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Leopard while the shyer Wild Dog and Cheetah are spotted less often.
Arrive back at camp between 10am and 11am and enjoy a sumptuous brunch. Guests can enjoy a siesta and relax before heading out in the late afternoon for some more game viewing. Some of the bird species in the area include Greater Painted Snipe, Tawny Eagle, Martial Eagle and African Rail. |
Day 7: Khwai to Savuti, Chobe National Park, BotswanaToday you will travel the 100km (62.13 miles) from Khwai to Savuti. Enjoy an early breakfast before heading out for a game drive en route to Savuti. The drive will take between 4 to 5 hours and will take you over the Magwikwe Sand-ridge that forms the shoreline of the dried up Paleo-Lake Makgadigadi. The old lake bed in now known as the Mababe Depression.
The Mababe Depression attracts a wide range of animals, especially after the rains. You'll arrive at the pre-setup camp after lunch, where they can unwind and rest. After a delicious afternoon tea, guests will head out and explore some of the surrounding area.
Some of the game you can expect to see include Elephant, Lion and Cheetah, while birds include Village Indigobird, Violet-eared Waxbill, Red-necked Falcon, Secretary Bird, Black-shouldered Kite and Gabar Goshawk. |
Day 8 & 9: Savuti, Chobe National Park, BotswanaFor the next 2 days of your Botswana safari you'll be able to explore Savuti in the Chobe National Park. After an early morning light breakfast, you'll head out for some game viewing before returning to camp between 10am and 11am. Enjoy a delicious brunch before relaxing and freshening up. Head out for more game viewing in the late afternoon.
The area is well known for Hyena, Lion and Elephant. Here the lions have learned how to hunt the adolescent and even young adult elephants. The area is also home to Cheetah. During the rainy season, Wild Dog is often spotted hunting in the area.
The water attracts a wide range of bird life, ranging from sandgrouse, Red-crested Korhaan, Chestnut-backed Sparrowlark, Rufous-naped Lark and African Pipit. |
